This stat is astounding when I think of the scale of loss: "In some areas, 1” of top soil takes about 500-1,000 years to form. We are losing topsoil and 2,000 acres of farmland per day."

Somewhat related, I remember during my time in Korea, there was an annual "dust season" usually in late February through March. The "dust" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_Dust) was a mix of sand, dust, and industrial pollution that would be carried on the wind from Northeast China/Mongolia and down the Korean peninsula and make it as far as Southern Japan. I think much of it was due to desertification in that Northeastern area of China and Mongolia: loss of topsoil and trees, etc.

Very unhealthy and not nice to be outdoors on those days. It gets so bad some days that the US forces based in Korea will issue daily air quality alerts and cancel training exercises. I used to monitor the USFK websites as they seemed to reliable air quality measurements in English.

Thanks, Neil, for your thoughtful comments and sharing your experiences in Korea. Dust season sounds awful, and yes, sadly, it's due to desertification. Good you had the USFK site to guide your decisions!

The wind seems to be increasing in parts of the U.S. and it may be due to desertification.

May millions of trees and plants be planted to help bring back the forests and fields of wildflowers!!

I appreciate our shared love of nature, Neil.

Robin, you are doing a wonderful and so important work! Yes, let us heal the soil and so the ecosystem, humanity and ourselves. I love your saying “The health is wealth. Healthy people create a world of well-being.” This is so true in so many ways.

Soil is our connection to the past, to who we are as humans, where we come from, it means life in so many ways. Let us make that possible for the future generations, too.

Thank you very much for your kind, supportive comments. So true, soil is our connection to the past, and who we are, and where we came from, and is our future...

By the way, before I was creating food and pollinator gardens, I was a colorist and did more than 5,000 color consultations and taught workshops. I am a painter/artist, and owned my own design-build business. I love color- and nature is the best artist/colorist! ; )

Oh, you are a kindred spirit! And you are so right about nature being the best artist - I am always in awe of the colour combinations found in nature...
